Sen. Bob Graham could tip the balance in favor of getting the “good” Endangered Species Recovery Act introduced in the Senate. The only way he will possibly do this is if he is swamped with phone calls, especially from Florida — TODAY AND TOMORROW! (Sept 30 and Oct 1, 1999).
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) needs a good list of cosponsors before he can introduce a Senate bill identical to HR 960, the bill in the House. Bob Graham is the highest-ranking Minority (Democrat) member on the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee — he would carry the weight of several other Senators, if he agreed to cosponsor Lautenberg’s bill.
Graham has shown increasing interest in the endangered species issues this summer — probably because he keeps hearing from so many folks in Florida.
Now we need to do it one more time — with as many people as possible — to try to get the agreement from him. Sen. Lautenberg has contacted Graham this week, asking him to cosponsor. NOW is the time to re-emphasize to Graham that THIS IS WHAT THE VOTERS WANT HIM TO DO. In the last Congress, every major environmental organization in the country agreed that this was the only good bill to extend the Endangered Species Act.
So please — today and tomorrow — call Graham’s office in Washington. If at all possible, talk to his Senior Policy Advisory, Catherine Cyr, and let her or someone else know that you are a voter in Florida and you want Sen. Graham to cosponsor Sen. Lautenberg’s Endangered Species Recovery Act.
