Since 2003, Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) has worked at important Panamanian sea turtle nesting beaches in the Bocas del Toro Province and the Comarca Ngäbe Buglé, from the Changuinola river to the Chiriquí river. Four sea turtle species are found in the waters of Bocas del Toro and the Comarca; Leatherback, Hawksbill, Green, and Loggerhead.

Desde el año 2003, la Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) ha trabajado en importantes playas de anidación de tortugas marinas en el Caribe panameño, dentro de la Provincia de Bocas del Toro y la Comarca Ngäbe Buglé, desde el río Changuinola hasta el río Chiriquí. 4 especies de tortugas marinas se encuentran en las aguas de Bocas del Toro y la Comarca: Canal o Baula (Dermochelys coriacea), Carey (Eretmochelys imbricata), Verde (Chelonia mydas) y Cabezona (Caretta caretta).

Research and monitoring of sea turtles in Tortuguero, Costa Rica was initiated in the 1950´s by legendary sea turtle researcher Dr Archie Carr. Dr Carr continued his work in Tortuguero until his passing away in 1987 and the Sea Turtle Conservancy continues to conduct annual programs at the site, making it the longest ongoing sea turtle conservation and monitoring program in the world. STC works closely with Costa Rican authorities, the Tortuguero community and other sea turtle conservation organizations in the country. Information collected during the annual Green Turtle Program plays a key role in developing effective management strategies for sea turtles in the area.

Cada año entre junio y noviembre la STC desarrolla el Programa de Tortuga Verde, como continuación del trabajo iniciado por el Dr Carr. La STC trabaja en coordinación con las autoridades de Costa Rica, la comunidad de Tortuguero y otras organizaciones de conservación de tortugas marinas en el país. La información recolectada durante el Programa de Tortuga Verde juega un papel clave en el desarrollo de un manejo adecuado de tortugas marinas en el área.

La investigación y monitoreo de tortugas marinas en Tortuguero, Costa Rica se inició en los años 50‘s por el legendario investigador Dr Archie Carr.  El Dr Carr continuó su trabajo en Tortuguero hasta su muerte en 1987 y la Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) aún continúa el proyecto cada año. En 1995, la STC inició el Programa de Tortuga Baula con el objetivo de estudiar las tortugas baulas (Dermochelys coriacea) en el área, poco conocidas hasta el momento. Cada año, entre Marzo y Junio, los investigadores de la STC recolectan información sobre esta amenazada especie. El programa combina actividades de monitoreo e investigación con un Programa de Educación Ambiental y Divulgación en la comunidad.

Since 2003, Anne and Peter Meylan have worked in partnership with the staff of the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) to monitor important Panamanian sea turtle nesting beaches in the Bocas del Toro Province and the Comarca Ngäbe Buglé, from the Changuinola River to the Chiriquí River. Key among these beaches are three in the Bastimentos Island National Marine Park (BINMP), Small Zapatilla Cay, Big Zapatilla Cay, and Playa Larga. Up to 6 research assistants are needed to help with this work during each nesting season.
