Lillian-Hazel is an adult female loggerhead sea turtle encountered nesing on Wassaw, GA by researchers from University of Florida Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research and the Caretta Research Project (CRP). She measured 101.1 cm curved carapace (shell) length. Lillian Hazel was first tagged by CRP in 2008 on Wassaw NWR. We don’t know where she went for 6 years, but she returned to nest in 2015, 2017, 2020, and 2025. In 2022 she also nested 4 times on St. Catherine’s Island, but overall has laid 21 nests on Wassaw NWR. She has a documented grand total of 2424 eggs, and 1256 hatchlings that emerged. At least 6 documented nests have been lost to storms or tidal surge. Through the genetics project run by Dr. Brain Shamblin at UGA, we have determined that Lillian does not have any known relatives in the North Atlantic Recovery Unit at this time. Lillian-Hazel was released with a satellite transmitter on May 29, 2025. Data © UF Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research.
