Bermuda Turtle Project

Five Decades of Research

Studying sea turtles in their marine environment is vital to finding out how well they are doing at various life stages.

This Research Helps Fill in Missing Gaps

Bermuda is one of a number of locations worldwide where post-pelagic, immature green turtles occur in the complete absence of adults. It may be the best site in the world where green turtles of this age can be studied in their natural habitat. Whereas most studies of sea turtles take place on nesting beaches, Bermuda provides scientists and resource managers with a unique opportunity to study the little understood juvenile stage of the green turtle.

The research efforts of the Bermuda Turtle Project are focused on filling in the information gaps on green turtle biology so that successful protection may be given to these fascinating, vanishing animals.

The Bermuda Turtle Project is a collaborative effort of the Sea Turtle Conservancy and the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo. STC’s Rick Herren and Dr. Daniel R Evans serve as the project’s Scientific Directors, Drs. Anne Meylan and Peter Meylan serve as Project Advisors, Dr. Gaëlle Roth and Jennifer Gray serve as Project Coordinators.

Annual Course

To help promote worldwide sea turtle conservation, every year since 1996 the Bermuda Turtle Project has offered an international course on the biology and conservation of sea turtles. The two-week course consists of extensive in-water field work capturing immature green turtles and hawksbills, lectures, class discussions of assigned readings, and a necropsy session. Participants are from Bermuda and other nations where the sea turtles that use Bermuda waters are likely to spend time during their long and complex live cycles. The course is given in conjunction with a two-week sampling session in Bermuda. Participants contribute to the project while learning the fundamentals of sea turtle biology from hands-on experience and a set of carefully selected readings. The course is designed around the life history of sea turtles.
