Abstract: The black sand beach of Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica hosts the largest green turtle (Chelonia mydas) breeding colony in the Western Hemisphere and in the Atlantic (Carr et al., 1978). Tortuguero also supports a leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) nesting population, monitored since 1995 (Campbell et al., 1996).
