Beachfront Lighting Education

Lighting Education & Outreach

There are many industries that are involved with mitigating artificial light at night and their decisions can have significant impacts on our nesting beaches. Members of the lighting industry, government agencies, utility companies, local property owners, and visitors are responsible for using the correct lighting practices in a community to promote a positive outcome for sea turtles and other wildlife. However, these groups can sometimes be isolated or unaware of how their lighting decisions impact their beaches.

Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) works on multiple initiatives and offers workshops to help reduce the negative impact of artificial light on sea turtle nesting beaches. STC offers a variety of outreach tools, including training for code enforcement personnel and lighting professionals, expertise to assist local governments with lighting ordinance updates, resources for new coastal property owners, engagement with coastal hardware stores to carry wildlife friendly lights, and lighting displays that can be used to educate local communities about managing problematic lights.

Through these outreach efforts, STC aims to protect sea turtle populations by reducing disorientation caused by artificial light encroaching on nesting habitat. Each of these tools targets an audience that has the authority to make tangible, positive change when it comes to darkening beaches and recovering sea turtle populations.

Other Initiatives

Learning More About Lighting

Training Workshops

Workshops are offered virtually or in-person to educate code enforcement, planners, and lighting professionals on the impacts of artificial light at night, best management practices, and laws for sea turtle protection.

Updating Ordinances

STC assists coastal governments in Florida with updating their local lighting ordinances for sea turtle protection by offering our lighting knowledge, meeting with local stakeholders, reviewing draft language, presenting at commission meetings, and providing outreach materials to the community.

Real Estate Initiative

Many beachfront property owners in Florida are new to the area and are unaware that sea turtles may nest in their backyards. STC provides coastal real estate agents with attractive educational information they can give to their clients at closing with important messages about protecting the natural resources in their new community.

Hardware Store Initiative

STC connects with wildlife friendly lighting manufacturers, local home improvement store managers, and corporate representatives to make wildlife friendly lighting more accessible to coastal communities in local hardware stores.

Lighting Displays

Lighting displays designed to educate residents and visitors about wildlife friendly lighting are available for coastal communities to borrow. Each side of the display explains one of the three rules to wildlife friendly lighting and includes lighting products that meet these criteria.

All materials are provided in a folder with art designed by a local Florida artist.
